How many miles is a 5K?
The short answer, the conversion table, and what a good 5K time actually looks like, plus how to pace it.
A 5K is 3.107 miles, exactly 5 kilometres. Because one kilometre equals 0.621 miles, you multiply 5 by 0.621 to get 3.107 miles. Most people round it to 3.1 miles, and the difference is only about 12 metres, so for training and racing the two are interchangeable.
The conversion factor to remember is 1 kilometre = 0.621 miles, and going the other way, 1 mile = 1.609 kilometres. Every race distance below is just that same factor applied.
Race distances in miles and kilometres
| Race | Kilometres | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| 5K | 5.000 | 3.107 |
| 10K | 10.000 | 6.214 |
| 15K | 15.000 | 9.321 |
| Half marathon | 21.098 | 13.109 |
| Marathon | 42.195 | 26.219 |
Typical 5K finish times by level
There is no single "normal" 5K time. It depends on training, age, and terrain, and these ranges give you an honest sense of where different levels land over the 3.107 miles.
| Level | Finish time | Pace / mile |
|---|---|---|
| Brisk walk | 45–60 min | 14:30–19:20 |
| Beginner (run/walk) | 35–45 min | 11:16–14:30 |
| Recreational runner | 25–33 min | 8:03–10:37 |
| Trained runner | 20–25 min | 6:26–8:03 |
| Competitive | Under 20 min | Under 6:26 |

Frequently asked
How many miles is a 5K run?
A 5K is 3.107 miles. The 'K' stands for kilometre, so a 5K is exactly 5 kilometres, and one kilometre is 0.621 miles. Multiply 5 by 0.621 and you get 3.107 miles.
How long does it take to walk or run a 5K?
Most walkers finish a 5K in 45 to 60 minutes at a brisk pace. New runners using a run/walk approach often finish in 35 to 45 minutes, regular recreational runners in 25 to 35 minutes, and competitive runners under 20 minutes.
How many laps of a track is a 5K?
A standard outdoor running track is 400 metres per lap in lane one, so a 5K is 12.5 laps. Twelve full laps gets you to 4,800 metres, and the final half-lap covers the last 200 metres.
Is 3.1 miles the same as a 5K?
Almost. A 5K is 3.107 miles, which people usually round to 3.1 miles. The tiny difference (about 12 metres) comes from rounding, so for training and racing you can treat 5K and 3.1 miles as the same distance.
What is a good pace for a 5K?
A good 5K pace depends on your fitness. A sub-30-minute 5K needs about 9:39 per mile, a sub-25 needs 8:03 per mile, and a sub-20 needs 6:26 per mile. Use the pace calculator to turn your goal time into an exact per-mile and per-kilometre target.
