How many steps are in a mile?
The short answer, the formula behind it, and a steps-per-mile table by height, because your stride, not an average, decides your count.
There are about 2,000 steps in a mile when walking and about 1,500 steps when running, but the real number depends on your height and stride. Shorter people take more steps to cover a mile, taller people take fewer, and running strides are longer than walking strides, so you take fewer steps per mile at a run than at a walk.
Those 2,000 and 1,500 figures are population averages. If you want your own number, the maths is simple, and it comes down to a single input: stride length.
The steps-per-mile formula
A mile is 63,360 inches. Divide that by your stride length in inches and you get your steps per mile:
steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ stride length (inches)
You do not need to measure your stride to estimate it. It scales with your height, and a good rule of thumb is stride ≈ height × 0.413 for walking and stride ≈ height × 0.65 for running. Plug your height into those, then divide 63,360 by the result. For a 5'8" (68 inch) person, walking stride is about 28.1 inches, giving roughly 2,256 steps per mile.
Steps per mile by height
Here is how the count shifts with height, for both walking and running. Use the row closest to your height for a quick estimate.
| Height | Walking steps / mile | Running steps / mile |
|---|---|---|
| 5'0" (152 cm) | 2,557 | 1,625 |
| 5'4" (163 cm) | 2,397 | 1,523 |
| 5'8" (173 cm) | 2,256 | 1,433 |
| 6'0" (183 cm) | 2,131 | 1,354 |
| 6'4" (193 cm) | 2,019 | 1,283 |
Estimates using stride = height × 0.413 (walking) and × 0.65 (running). Your real stride varies with pace, terrain, and leg length.
Convert your own step count
Rather than reach for a table, enter your height and step count into the steps-to-miles calculator to convert any number of steps into miles and kilometres using your own stride. To go the other way between metric and imperial distances, the distance converter does it instantly, and the pace calculator turns your distance and time into a pace. Frequently asked
How many steps are in a mile?
There are about 2,000 steps in a mile when walking and about 1,500 steps when running. The exact number depends on your height and stride length: shorter people take more steps, and running strides are longer than walking strides.
How do I calculate my own steps per mile?
Divide 63,360 (the number of inches in a mile) by your stride length in inches. Your walking stride is roughly your height times 0.413, and your running stride is roughly your height times 0.65. For a 5'8" person that is about 2,256 walking steps and 1,433 running steps per mile.
How many steps is a 5K?
A 5K is 3.107 miles, so at about 2,000 walking steps per mile it is roughly 6,200 steps walking, and at about 1,500 running steps per mile it is roughly 4,700 steps running. Your exact count depends on your height and stride.
Does height change how many steps are in a mile?
Yes, height is the biggest factor. A taller person covers more ground with each step, so they take fewer steps per mile. A 5'0" walker takes around 2,560 steps per mile, while a 6'4" walker takes around 2,020, for the same one-mile distance.
How many steps is 10,000 steps in miles?
Around 5 miles walking, using the 2,000-steps-per-mile average. If your steps are shorter you might cover closer to 4 miles, and if your stride is long you could cover 5.5 miles or more. Convert your own step count with the steps-to-miles calculator.
