Steps to miles calculator.
Turn any step count into miles and kilometres. Add your height for a distance based on your own stride, not an average.
How steps convert to miles
A mile is 63,360 inches. To find how many steps fit into a mile, divide that by your stride length in inches. Someone with a 25-inch walking stride takes about 2,534 steps per mile; a longer 32-inch stride needs only about 1,980. Once you know your steps per mile, the distance for any step count is simply your steps divided by that figure, and one mile is 1.60934 kilometres.
This calculator estimates your stride from your height when you provide it (roughly 41.3% of your height while walking and about 65% while running, because your stride opens up as you speed up). Without a height it falls back to the common averages of 2,000 steps per mile walking and 1,500 running. Both are estimates: the only exact number comes from counting your steps over a measured distance.
Steps per mile by height (walking)
| Height | Walking steps / mile | Running steps / mile |
|---|---|---|
| 5'0" (152 cm) | 2,514 | 1,597 |
| 5'4" (163 cm) | 2,357 | 1,498 |
| 5'8" (173 cm) | 2,218 | 1,409 |
| 6'0" (183 cm) | 2,095 | 1,331 |
| 6'4" (193 cm) | 1,986 | 1,262 |

Frequently asked
How many steps are in a mile?
For most people it is roughly 2,000 steps per mile when walking and about 1,500 when running, because your stride lengthens as you speed up. The exact number depends on your height: a taller person covers a mile in fewer steps. Enter your height above for a figure based on your own stride rather than an average.
How do you convert steps to miles?
Divide your step count by your steps-per-mile figure. Steps per mile is 63,360 (the number of inches in a mile) divided by your stride length in inches. This calculator estimates your stride from your height (about 41.3% of height when walking and 65% when running), then does the division for you and also shows the distance in kilometres.
Why is my running step count fewer per mile than walking?
When you run your stride gets longer, so each step covers more ground and it takes fewer steps to complete a mile. That is why the same 10,000 steps is a longer distance if they were run rather than walked. Pick the right activity above so the estimate matches how you moved.
Is the 2,000 steps per mile rule accurate?
It is a reasonable default, but it can be off by 15% or more for very tall or very short people, or for anyone with an unusually long or short stride. Entering your height gives a closer estimate. For an exact figure, measure the steps you take over a known distance and divide.
How do I turn a step goal into real training?
Steps measure movement, not fitness progression. To actually get faster or go further, you need runs and walks that build week over week with the right mix of easy and hard days. Gritup turns your goal into an adaptive plan that does exactly that, and adjusts when life gets in the way.
